Wizard of Oz Birthday Cake

The shoes were made from melted chocolate in molds and disco dust which I love but it's not truly food safe. Interesting but cake vendors sell it!

This little Dorothy and Toto took me quite a while but thankfully I had my Argentinian cold porcelain magazines to help. I also used my Yorkie, Boxxy, as a model for Toto. She wasn't a very still model, that's for sure! Dorothy was fondant and Toto was chocolate, yum!! Oh, and the rainbow. I handcut it out of gumpaste, painted it one color at a time and sprinkled Wilton's shimmer dust on each stripe. The cloud were handcut, airbrushed and then swirled with an edible marker.

The cake was handpainted with a combination of icing colors and pearl dust. I'm definitely not a painter, and I really need to get with my art teacher friend for some classes. The poppies were made out of royal icing and airbrushed with gold and red pearl dust. I love poppies! I remember picking them during my trip to Morocco, so I had to get them in this cake somewhere. I put little fondant circles on the backs of some of them so they would stand out.

Butterflies & Bows 1st Birthday Cake

I had this design in my mind for a while and was able to use it with this cake. I marked a wooden skewer and then pressed it into the sides of the fondant to create stripes. Then I handpainted each stripe with vanilla and pearl dust. At first I was not happy with the streaks but in the end I think it really added to the striped effect.

The topper was made by printed out a design off of the invitation on edible paper and then mounting it to fondant/gumtex and cutting with an x-acto knife. I had purchased some butterfly cutters a while back and finally got to use them. I shaped the cutouts on leaf formers after stamping some holes with a wooden Wilton gumpaste tool. After they dried I airbrushed them with vanilla and pearl dust and then filled in the holes with royal icing.

Baby Motif Cupcakes

I want to give a shot out to my auntie who a while back gave me a bunch of candy molds, so her baby motif mold came in really handy. I monogrammed each with an edible marker. The dics are edible paper I printed out from a google pic and cut into circles and then placed on pink fondant circles and marked with an edible marker.

the setup - I love Amy Atlas! I looked at her pics for a while ( http://www.amyatlas.com/index.php/main/portfolio/ ), and then went to Walmart for an hour. I would love to do wedding dessert tables some day, whenever a bride becomes interested...;)

First time doing banana cake, and it really wasn't that bad....if you like banana.

I can't wait to finally do a dulce de leche cake for someone. In the words of Rachel Ray, it's totally "delish"!

You can't go wrong with brown and pink....and M 'n' Ms! (See lower right hand corner. Easter season candy went perfect with the colors I chose.)

Another detail was using plastic mesh from Lowes, placing it on top of the frosting sheets, and airbrushing them. This would be more fitting to make napkins, not tissue paper, but it was interesting and easy.

I used my new klay gun for the lollipop wand and it worked sooooo much better than my plastic one. Handpainted the wand for swirl effect and sprayed some Pam on it to keep the shine.

Ostrich Feather Zebra-Striped Cake w/ Monogram Cupcakes

This was for a 13th birthday party. Cake was yellow with chocolate buttercream, covered in vanilla fondant. Handpainted zebra-stripes, numbers were fondant/gumtex with silver dragees. Also used silver dragees to make the belt buckles at the base. Everything is edible (except for the feathers :P)

Teal Monogram Cupcakes

These went along with the feather cake. The circles are fondant with the A's handwritten with an edible black marker. I'm horrible at handwriting, but it seems if I concentrate really hard, I can write one letter at a time fairly ok.

I think next time I do chocolate buttercream, I'll pipe it a different way. I think being a dog owner, it just looked a little too similar to something else...:P

Pikachu Birthday Cake

This was a fun cake I did for a good friend's 8th birthday. I basically copied a google pic of a Pikachu figurine. The grass hill and tree stump were vanilla cake with chocolate ganache and fondant (the tree bark was chocolate candy clay which holds texturizing better). Everything, everything, everything was airbrushed. I was very lazy with this cake. The apples and leaves were candy clay.

Due to my laziness, Pikachu's tail didn't last very long. I had made it out of gumpaste/fondant the night before, so it was not dry and started curving as soon as I put it on. The ears made it okay. I let them dry in Wilton leaf formers, I believe, and that gave them the curve. Oh, and the body and head are rice cereal treats covered in chocolate candy clay and then fondant. You can still see the lumps from the rice cereal which I don't like :(

Here is the birthday boy. I've known him ever since he was born. And before!! Happy Birthday, Eli!!!

Army Cake

This was for a guy who's going off to bootcamp. His fiancee requested it, and I'll be doing their wedding next semester. The cake shape is similar to one I saw on Cake Lava's website. I handpainted the camouflage and used silver pearl dust for the stars.

The dog tag was made out of fondant and silver dragees. I used gel piping to adhere them to the vinyl board and it seemed to hold well. Oh, because I took on too much this weekend, I had to resort to Wilton fondant and realized how much I don't like it! Too thick and doesn't give!

Prima Ballerina Cake

This cake traveled all the way to Vidalia, GA. Design was based somewhat on the party invitations. Vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream covered in fondant.

While in Argentina, my mother-in-law bought me some magazines on molding figurines in gumpaste and cold porcelain, because it seems to be really popular there and the sugar artists in Argentina do such amazing work with figurines. So, I got to do some studying and then some practice this weekend.

This cake was for a 4-yr. old I believe, so I got out my edible markers and did some coloring on this cake. It looks like scribble-scratch, but it's actually about the best I can do :P

My Nephew´s Baptism Cake

So, here I am in Argentina, and I still got a chance to scratch my cake itch! This was for my little nephew Eugenio´s baptism. My husband´s family postponed this special occasion to share it with us.

The figurines I made beforehand and brought along with my marshmallow fondant and a box full of my most important cake decorating tools.

The shepherd was somewhat inspired by a ¨Precious Moments¨figurine. I used a guide on the internet for the sheep. It comes from Utilisima, a great cake decorating tool here in Argentina http://www.utilisima.com/pasteles/5862

Yanina made the cake and I ganached and covered it in fondant. Everything is made with fondant. I worked in a very small space with his family watching, but it turned out ok. My sister-in-law is a trained artist and she helped me with the design and gave me the great idea of covering popsicle sticks with fondant for the fence instead of having to wait for the fondant to dry hard. She also gave me some great tips on mixing colors.

By the way, it´s summer here, and boy was this cake sweating! I learned a great lesson which is to always make sure the legs of a figurine are made out of fondant that is equally as hard as the body. The pink fondant was way too soft and kept squashing under the sheep´s body weight. The sheep on the top jumped off the hill and committed suicide!

I used a fan brushed to paint the texture for the grass and that turned out pretty cool.

Here are some pics from my most recent wedding cake.

The bride opted for an easy design, which I was very thankful for since this was only my second wedding cake and they're still a little scary!

Wedding topper was purchased from "If It's Paper" on Washington Rd., a great little shop for wedding and party supplies. The flowers were handmade from fondant and painted with pearl and petal dusts.

The cake was fudge marble with chocolate buttercream filling and covered with chocolate ganache and vanilla fondant.

My husband took the pics and my mom edited them. A big thanks to both!

Didn't know about the cool bundt idea until after I baked the cakes already, but it worked out fine. I baked three very thick 9 in. cakes and then carved them down.

This was one of those "good cake" days, you know? No real setbacks and the finished product is pretty much what you had hoped for. After carved, frosting, and covering with fondant, I airbrushed the cake, starting with yellow, orange/red, brown, green, and a little black. The stem was fondant and marshmallow fondant mixed together. The leaves were cut out of fondant, thinned out, embossed, handpainted, airbrushed, and stuck with wire. The wire I actually painted with vanilla/coloring and then painted on top with green pearl dust to help keep the color.

Since this was for family and I use family as my cake guinea pigs, I tried a new recipe which was peanut butter cake, torted and filled with chocolate ganache and Reeses peanut butter chips, and then covered with chocolate ganache and a thin layer of vanilla marshmallow fondant.

Flower Baby Shower Cake

This cake was devil's food chocolate with vanilla buttercream and chocolate buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant.

Each fondant leaf was veined, handpainted, and hooked with wires. Then I stuck each leaf individually into the cake. The cake was airbrushed. On the top I made some lines with an embosser and then used some orange and brown airbrush paint to add detail. The baby was made out of fondant and I used a stamp that said "Shower" at the front of the cake.

It was very nice to return to an old design. This was for a 50th birthday. I made the top using a Georgia stencil I made by hand and the airbrush. It didn't come out as clean as I would have liked, so I'll need to work on that.

Another Monkey Cake

Once again, this is an old design, however the mother helped add a new spin on it by requesting that the top tier be only done in buttercream and brown dots. As always, the buttercream and I fought constantly, but I think I won, hopefully.

horrible pic but you can still see how happy the monkeys are :P

I used my klay gun for the green vines and it's really nice but it was so hard to press out. My fondant I think was too tough, so I added glucose and that seemed to help. Does anyone have tips on using the klay gun?

Devil's Food Chocolate with Chocolate Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache, and Marshmallow Fondant

I used a cookie cutter for the fondant cutouts and handpainted them. The bubbles were premade with royal icing.

The cake was airbrushed and sponge painted with pink pearl dust.

The mug is candy clay that was airbrushed and piped on top with royal icing. I touched up the royal icing with silver pearl dust to add depth.

The cake is devil's food with vanilla buttercream. The cake was airbrushed on the sides, handpainted on the top. Fondant figurines & pumpkins and royal icing stars.

Watching the video with the kindergarteners at my school really helped for the inspiration :)

Optimus Prime Cake

Flower Overlay Cake

Mother's 60th birthday

The daughter wanted bright colors with the wavy overlay design. The overlay was airbrushed and the bottom was handpainted. The flower was several large fondant/gum tex circles ruffled on the edges like a carnation and then a royal icing button in the middle.

I used pearl dust to paint the fondant flowers and royal icing dots. The cake was yellow cake with vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant.

This was for a girl's quinceanera or 15th birthday party. Overall, this cake was fine but I was really out of my league trying a square topsy-turvy cake. If anyone knows of a demo or any tips or where to learn more about how it's done, that would be greatly appreciated.

A big thanks to my mom for huge help. Not only did she write this message on the card but she kept the kitchen clean and helped deliver it to the Mariott hotel. And thanks to my hubby who stresses out even more than me. I think we almost all had heart attacks.

This was my other cake this weekend for a very special friend, Ashley! She and I were good friends in college at North Greenville University and her mom came all the way from Greenville to pick up the cake and surprise her on her birthday. Happy Birthday, Ashley!!

The cake was french vanilla with chocolate ganache, covered in marshmallow fondant. I actually used a greeting card as a base for this design.

This is my second attempt at a topsy-turvy cake. The first one was last January and I definitely won't be posting pics of that!

Jordan XII Shoe Cake & Basketball Cupcake Display

French vanilla cupcakes, frosted with vanilla SWB and topped with fondant basketballs. This idea I orginially found in Elisa Strauss's Confetti Cakes book.

This cake/cupcake display was made for a girl's 16th birthday. She plays basketball at Hephzibah. The stand is a Wilton stand, and I really like how it went with this design.

This is an attempted replica of the girl's Air Jordan XIII tennis shoes. The cake was french vanilla also with vanilla SMB, and covered with Wilton fondant.

I didn't have a shoe to copy, so I looked up a million pics on the internet. The shoe came out a little fat. I have a tendency to always make things "fatter" in proportion.

This was made for a special grandmother's birthday. I had made these fantasy flowers a while ago and was looking for a chance to finally use them.

The cake was lemon with swiss buttercream, covered in Wilton fondant. it was handpainted. When it dried, I painted it with piping gel to give it a ceramic shine, but that was really a big mistake. The ivy did not want to stay on at all.

Thanks to an old high school friend, Lynne Charles, I finally got to do another pretty cake, yeah!

This cake was for a 17 yr. old's birthday. I was told she didn't get a sweet sixteen, so I hope this cake makes up for it!

This was my first time trying out bead decorations. I really like the idea, and although they're not edible, I don't really think most people eat the wire decorations anyway.

Flowers were made out of fondant with gumtex. Paint and royal icing were used.

The cake was devil's food chocolate, torted and filled with chocolate swiss buttercream and chocolate ganache, covered with marshmallow fondant that misbehaved very badly on me for some reason.

Although, it's not a full-blown topsy-turvey cake, I carved it a little, to give it a whimsical feel. Cake was also painted with teal pearl dust.

Elmo Cake for Twins

Elmo's head had to be done twice. The first time I used rice tries stuck in the cake with a skewer, but the skewer totally split the head apart, so then I had to resort once again to a styrofoam ball.

Eyes are candy clay, nose is fondant, cake is fudge marble with vanilla buttercream. Hands were made out of candy clay also.

3D Dinosaur Cake

Dino got back! Everything was pretty much fondant except the underpart of the tail was candy clay. Cake was marble fudge with chocolate buttercream.

Phew, this cake was super tough! The body seemed okay, the arms were a little small because I was running out of the fondant. Then I got to the head, and what a disaster! I had planned on using candy clay but it seemed way too heavy, so I ended up using a foam ball. I'm not super happy with the face. It's one of those faces that a kid will either love or have nightmares about later on.

Tractor Cake

This design was created from the invitation which had a red, yellow, and green tractor. I have them wrapping around the cake, although the red one is the only one that shows in the pics.

My first purse cake, complete with chocolate candy clay pearls, fingernail polish, keychain, and lipgloss.

The cake was chocolate with chocolate swiss buttercream. I didn't make any plans or calculate dimensions before and I really should have. While delivering the cake, the handle completely melted and fell off and the fingernail polish fell down. Stressful delivery to say the least!!

The wife wanted two controls for her and her husband. It was a surprise cake for the husband. The controls were made out of rice krispie treats, frosted with vanilla buttercream and covered in fondant.

I had wanted these letters to stand up, but it was not in the cards today! Cake was strawberry with vanilla buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant. Fondant was used for all the decorations, except for the piping which was royal icing.

This cake wore me out! I had to do the screen like four different times! I tried pastillage, fondant and gum tex, and then I finally resulted to candy clay, phew! I stuck wooden skewers through the screen to help support it. Other than that, this lappy is completely edible.

Yellow cake with swiss meringue buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant. Keyboard is chocolate candy clay. White screen is fondant. Royal icing and edible marker used for letters. I used a cutdown credit card to make the touch pad indention.

The birthday girl liked lime, so I went with that, since there are some lime laptops out there. This laptop is not really a pc or mac, it's just really a conglomeration of a bunch of google photos I looked at, which was not necessary since we have like 3 or 4 working and non-working laptops hanging around here.

DONUT Cake!!!

I'm trying to pretend like I'm biting it, but I didn't want to get too close and un-sanitize it!

This was my first airbrush cake, fun!! I love my airbrush, it makes coloring a lot quicker and gives added depth. The donut came out darker than I had wanted. It almost looks like a bundt cake. I could have used some white airbrush paint, if it exists, because my kit didn't have it.

This cake was for Mr. Guthrie's 95th birthday. He supposedly owns or sells a lot of the Krispy Kreme franchises. Cake was yellow cake with swiss meringue icing covered in marshmallow vanilla fondant. I airbrushed and then glazed the top with runny royal icing and piping gel. The logo was royal icing and totally broke, so I had to do a quick vinyl logo on top of the cake box, and it turned out fine.

Somebody wants a happy wife! Martina's flowers totally woke me up this morning, but it was worth it. Thank you, Gab! I love you!

Painter's Palette Cake

This is a painter's palette I did for the birthday of a grandmother I assume must be an artist. It was my first chance to try a wood grain effect on the fondant which was done by marbleizing brown and white fondant and then painting over with brown gel color. My brown paint was a little too dark and covered up most of the marbled fondant so next time I'll try to lighten that up a bit.

The paint globs are royal icing painted on top with piping gel and color. The paint brush is chocolate candy clay, yum! I'm trying to bring that out more because it seems to be yummier than fondant.

This cake was for a nanny who about to leave for Mississippi to work as an air traffic controller.

The tall thing in the middle is an air traffic control tower. Well, my version of it anyways. All the accents except the flowers and grass were royal icing which I am really starting to love, except they crack really easily.

My mom and I went to Jordan's 1st birthday party with cake and camera in hand. I couldn't have had a cuter model! And it's so nice having professional photos that make my cakes look better.

It is so amazing to me, the instincts of a one-year old. Jordan naturally knew exactly what to do, grabbing off fondant decorations and sampling them. How did he know it was edible?? Well, I guess it's trial-and-error, because I also saw him sampling some sand out out of his new sandbox.

It took Jordan a little while to warm up to his cake, but once he did it was all over! It made me feel so good to see him enjoying his first cake.

The cake was french vanilla, torted with chocolate ganache, frosted with vanilla buttercream and covered with vanilla marshmallow fondant.

Aquarium Cake

This was for a pool birthday party. The cake is chocolate with vanilla butter cream, covered in fondant. It is actually six -layers of cake, and I am still having a hard time getting square cakes straight. I never liked meat so unfortunately I have no carving skills!

I added white and blue pearl dust to the bubbles.

The starfish at the bottom were also made using candy molds. It's great because fondant molds are so expensive usually, and this candy mold cost only $2.

This cake was for Davidson, a nine-year old who happens to have the same birthday as our country.

The cake was vanilla with vanilla butter cream, and fondant accents. The blue stars at the bottom were actually made with a star candy mold. I had no idea you could use candy molds for fondant, but you can, and I love it!

This cake was for my neighbor's boyfriend's birthday. She and her husband have really helped get me cake business so I was very happy doing this cake. The cake was chocolate with butter cream icing, covered in fondant. I really admire people who can put together stacked cakes, and it looks sharp and clean. This cake was a struggle.

For this cake and the cake board I used a sponge to create a different kind of texture. It was so much easier than coloring fondant or painting.

1952 Chevy Pick-up and Elmo Cake

Elmo and 1952 Chevy Truck Cake for a Two-Year Old's Birthday

Elmo without his fur. I was going to use red royal icing for some fur but it was 7:30 in the morning, so I decided he looked alright shiny and smooth.

Ok, I know a lot more about Elmo than I do about trucks. I can tell the difference between a truck and a car but that's about it :P. I googled trucks and came across a blue 1952 Chevy pick-up, so that was my attempt in this cake.

The cake board was made out of white royal icing and fondant circles. The foam I had underneath didn't have pores so the royal icing didn't breath and dry up very well. The cake was French vanilla with butter cream icing, covered in fondant. The back of the truck was filled with red hots and fondant and sugar cube presents.

I used a straw, embosser, and icing tips for tire detailing.

Father's Day Golf Cake

Well, I know little about golf, but thankfully golf balls are pretty basic :P. This one is made out of rice treats and fondant.
The cake is strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting and berries 'n cream filling, yum!, all covered in vanilla marshmallow fondant.
The dad figurine is made out of gumpaste, and it looks much better than it would have, thanks to my mother-in-law in Argentina. She sent me a website, http://www.utilisima.com/which shows awesome, detailed, step-step instructions of how to make cake designs and figurines. I haven't been able to find much in English about making figurines, but if you know a little Spanish, this site is amazing. Thanks, Sonia!

This was a house wedding. And wow, my legs really are white!

The groom is a Georgia fan, like so many. The logos were royal icing floodwork, the cake was red velvet with cream cheesing frosting, covered in marshmallow fondant.

The roses and leaves are edible, hand-made out of gumpaste, brushed with edible dusts.

I made about two dozen, and you would not believe what good exercise rolling out gumpaste is. My arms are the only firm part of my body now!

Cake was yellow cake with white chocolate cream cheese frosting, covered in Wilton fondant. The topper was a gift from the bride's grandmother.

Weekend Cakes

Baby Shower Cake - It was designed off of the invitation. Bow was made out of gumpaste (next time I should try chocolate clay). Cake was yellow cake with swiss meringue buttercream and covered with american buttercream. It was my first time to make swiss meringue buttercream, and it is awesome!

The dreaded sheet cake! Haha, I am not a big sheet cake fan, in fact they almost seem more complicated to me, to try to fill up all that space without it looking like a Publix cake. It was red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese frosting. This frosting actually crusts which was awesome, so I was able to Viva it. I hand-painted it, my first time trying that on frosting. The cake was for a surprise retirement party. (I didn't know it was a surprise until I got the cake there, I almost put my foot in my mouth like five times!) For the design, they wanted feminine and flowers (scary!).

It was my first time really working with marshmallows and it was pretty fun except that the rabbit ears did not want to stay! Even Gabriel ending up in the kitchen cutting out some animal facial features!

Cobra Cake

This cake I made for my mom's 40th reunion with her high school group of friends called the cobras. It had to go on a seven hour trip so mom made sure she took these fantastic pictures beforehand :P. To make the cake I made three round cakes in 3 in. pans, so I wouldn't have to make two layers. I only had to carve a little to make sure the coils were round, but it was enough to slice pretty deep through my thumb. It's the worst cut I've ever had, so of course it made a good story the next day with my kindergarteners about making a Cobra cake that turned to life and bit me!
I covered the cakes with fondant that I had pressed with a cobblestone impression mat. Before covering, I also carved out a thin circle out of the top of each cake so each coil could sit snugly inside the other. I painted the fondant black, and then did yellow/green luster dust stripes. The head and tail were made out of rice treats. I used wired in the head and then covered it with gum paste. I also had a tall dowel inside the head that later poked down through all three layers of cake. The sign was made out of gum paste which ended up breaking later. I think I should of tried pastillage. The tongue was also made out of gum paste. The tongue and sign were affixed with royal icing.
This is a happy cobra :).

Unexpected Cupcakes for Mother's Day.

Well, I wasn't planning on doing any baking this weekend, since Gabriel was back after his two-week trip to Argentina, but I got a request for some Mother's Day/birthday flower cupcakes, and I was excited.

The cupcakes were yellow cake with butter-flavor buttercream except for the roses, which was Sam's Club icing. Red icing is super hard to get without having a lot of aftertaste, so my Wilton instructor let us in on Sam's Club red icing. It's nice and red with a yummy taste.

This rose was made mixing yellow/orange icing and red icing and using a really big rose tip.
The lady who requested the cupcakes had already seen my sunflower cakes, and she wanted a flower assortment, so I opted for red roses and blue/white carnations to match the sunflowers. Lots of fun, and I'm glad I got to do something for Mother's Day. Happy Mother's day to every mother reading this!

Symbolic Easter Cupcakes

I made these Easter cupcakes for my mom's group of Sunday school children. It was a good chance to practice the fondant/gumpaste rose I learned in my latest Wilton class.

Made of vanilla cake with buttercream - I melted the buttercream and it really help give a smooth shine to the frosting, kind of like ganache, accents are mint chocolate clay crosses, fondant roses, melted candy melt piping

Week of Cupcakes

Easter cupcakes for my class. The "grass" looks more like cabbageheads, but my kids didn't seem to care :) Made of vanilla sprinkle cake and buttercream frosting with Robin Egg candies on top.

These cupcakes were made for my friend Angel to take to her job's Easter dinner. She asked for pretty flowers, but since I had just made bright pretty flowers, I decided to go a different route with chocolate. The cupcakes are cream cheese brownies topped with chocolate ganache. It was my first time to make ganache and I am a big fan!

The embellishments are made from candy clay. I love it! It's much more fun and yummy than fondant, in my humble opinion. I used Wilton candy melts, and they worked like a charm, much easier than baking chocolate. The brown candy clay was made from mint chocolate candy melts. I accidently bought the mint flavor, but it turned out to be a good mistake, not a bad one :). I added some candy coloring to green melts to get the teal color. I really enjoyed making these cupcakes. Some day I should try eating what I make, just to be sure it's not gross!

Cake Vase with Cupcake Roses

This weekend I made a cake vase for Deb Young's birthday. It's an idea I've had "baking" in my mind for a while, so I used her birthday as an excuse to bring it to reality. Sorry Deb!

I made the cake out of chocolate pound cake and an all-butter buttercream. I really liked the taste of the buttercream, but it was a pill for piping the roses. I carved the cake to form and then covered it in fondant. The fondant squashed the neck of the vase somewhat, I wasn't too happy with the results. So I covered it up with strips of white gumpaste. I handpainted the vase and added piping and some fondantr daisies. I used floral foam in the top to attach the mini cupcake roses. They were made out of vanilla sprinkle cake.

The vase looks pretty polished but that's thanks to mom's professional photography and photo shop editing! It was actually a lot rougher than I would have liked but hopefully I'll find more reasons in the future to practice this cake design.

Bathtub Cake

This cake and cupcakes were made for Stefani King, an expectant mom at my school. Jessica Ham was planning the shower with a rubber ducky theme. I really was not sure what to do, so I scoured the internet like I always do, and found a lot of cute ideas. I also used some decorative tubs Jessica was using for centerpieces to help design the cake tub.

I made the tile floor out of gum paste. I hand painted it and then used royal icing as "caulk" in between the tiles. The soap was made out of gum paste also. The bubbles I made out of white candy clay that I rolled in powdered sugar and white pearl dust.

The cake is covered in Wilton fondant. I tried to cover it in handmade fondant first, but it was too dry and cracked horribly. Thankfully I had some emergency Wilton fondant on hand and it worked very nice. The baby is made out of gum paste. It was my first attempt at a gum paste figurine. Up close there were a lot of cracks. I think next time I will try a mixture of fondant and gum paste. The water is tinted gel piping. The ducks are also gum paste. The cake itself was chocolate cream cheese pound cake. The icing is white chocolate cream cheese. I used a icing whitener to give it a whiter look, but unfortunately I think it gave the icing an aftertaste.

The cupcakes are chocolate cake with the white chocolate cream cheese frosting. These ducks are actually made out of white chocolate candy clay. I wanted to make something to put on cupcakes that people will actually eat. Fondant is cute, but I'm tired of seeing it picked off on the sides of dessert plates. The "N"'s were actually fondant I believe, no wait, I think it was candy clay. It's all mixing up now! The "N"'s were for the baby, Nathaniel.

The buckles on the side were blue and gray gum paste, and then the gray was painted with silver pearl dust. So far, this was the most satisfied that I have been with a cake. However, I feel I'm still missing the mark as far as taste goes.

I have so many more ideas in my head. I just need reasons to do them and time!

Jackson's 2nd Birthday

3/14/09 - Train cake and cupcakes for my 2-year old second cousin Jackson's birthday. This train had to make a 7 hour trip and it was rough! Rule #1 - don't place cakes on a slant on their sides when traveling. Rule #2 - check your cake every once in a while (I should of remembered that from Ace of Cakes!).
The MM fondant sagged horribly, and I had a lot of structural issues anyways, but it was fun and bright at least. Seeing Jackson so excited about it made it all worthwhile. I've never seen a toddler eat so many cupcakes! Making the train cake for Jackson won his friendship right away (the first time I met him was with the train cake in my hands :)).

Well, I've finished another cake. This is my favorite so far. It made me really happy when I was done. I started getting on Gabriel's nerves, though, because I kept opening the refrigerator door to get another peek at the cake. Unfortunately, the cake high is only temporary. I'm ready to do another one.

The cake was made for Mrs. Hawkins, the pastor's wife at Southgate Baptist. She's a decorator with good fashion sense, so I tried to think of her when designing the cake. I stole the tablecloth idea from one of the cakes I saw in Charm City Cakes website.

This cake is very special to me because it was a shared creation by me and my mom! Then she sent it to the Garden City Rescue Mission. We did it in the last class of the first Wilton cake decorating class. It was a lot of fun, and although my mom says she goes to the class just to spend time with me, she makes sure I don't do anything to mess up our cakes! And a special thanks to her for the beautiful photos she's taken of all my sweets.

More Cupcake Bouquets

Well, this weekend I finally got around to working on some cupcake designs I've had whirling in my head recently.

These sunflower cupcakes, complete with ladybugs were actually taken from Karen Tack's book "Hello Cupcake!" which is filled with the cutest ideas for cupcakes.

You can't tell, but Pookie, my dog, ate half of one of the cupcakes in the back. At least I know they meet her approval :P

This bouquet was actually designed with my mom, Sharon, in mind.

Gabriel, my husband, actually gave me the idea for this flower. He loves Ferrero Rocher chocolate (I guess we all do).

According to my mom, chrysanthemums don't normally come in blue, but I just thought it might go nice with the yellow mug.

Curtis Open House Cupcakes, Feb. 12, 2009

This was one of a group of mini cupcakes that I made for Curtis Baptist's open house. It was a lot of fun to make, but I'm not sure how long that worm's gonna be able to win against gravity!

Here is the whole lot of cupcakes. The blue books say faith, hope, and love, representing the message of Curtis for their students.
